Performance Max is Google's everything campaign. You give it a budget, some photos, headlines and a goal, and Google spreads the ads across its whole network, from search results and YouTube to Maps and Gmail. It can find people your Search campaigns never would. It can also find the people already swiping in at your front desk every morning.
A gym has a problem most businesses don't. Its best customers are regulars who use its website, book its classes, search its name and click its ads. From Google's side, a member booking Saturday's spin class can look a lot like a stranger booking a first trial. Unless you tell Google who your members are, it has every reason to chase them.
Performance Max Waits for 30 Clean Joins a Month, Not a Date on the Calendar
Performance Max comes after Isolation and Exploration have proved themselves. The gate is volume, not the calendar: the account should be recording about 30 quality conversions a month, meaning real trial sign-ups, joins, tours and personal training consults, with both earlier campaigns running. For most gyms that takes six or seven months. A gym with a bigger budget, or several locations, can get there sooner.
The reason is what Performance Max learns from. It has no keywords to steer by. It looks at who converted and goes looking for more people like them across every Google channel. If those conversions are clean, it has a clear picture of a new member. If they're polluted with class bookings from existing members, the trap from Chapter 1, it builds its picture from your regulars and spends your budget finding more people who already belong to your gym.
Set the campaign to maximize conversions, and count the same trial and join actions as the rest of the account. Leave out a cost-per-conversion target at first so Performance Max has room to learn, then add one once it has a few weeks of results.
Members Click Gym Ads Too. A Member List Tells Google Who They Are.
Even with clean conversion tracking, members wander into your ads. They search your gym's name to find class times. They see a YouTube ad for the gym they already belong to and click out of curiosity. They book a class from a page Performance Max sent them to. Every one of those clicks is paid for.
The fix is something almost every gym already has: the member list. Your membership software holds an email address and usually a phone number for every current member. Google calls an upload of that data a customer list (the feature is Customer Match). Once it's in your account, Google can recognize those people when they show up.
A few practical points:
- Export from your membership software. Email and phone are the fields that match best. Include current members, and consider recent cancellations as a separate list, since they're a different audience.
- Check your privacy policy first. Google's Customer Match policy allows only information members gave you directly, such as at sign-up, and requires that your privacy policy says you share customer data with third parties that perform services for you. Read the policy before you upload anything.
- Refresh it. An uploaded member ages out of the list 540 days after it was added, and Google stops using a list with fewer than 100 fresh entries in that span. A monthly re-upload from the front-desk system keeps it current as people join and leave.
Google also reads your website tag to spot existing customers, but the list is the part you control. A gym with 800 members has 800 people it should never pay to acquire again.
Google Recommends "New Customer Only" for Lead Generation. A Trial Sign-Up Is a Lead.
The member list is half the setup. The other half is telling Performance Max what to do with it. Google calls this the customer acquisition goal, and it has more than one mode.
The one for gyms is New Customer Only. Google says this mode "is recommended only if you have strict budgets for customer acquisition, or have non-purchase conversion goals like lead generation." A gym's trial sign-up is exactly that: a lead, not a purchase. In this mode, Google bids only for people it doesn't recognize as existing customers. Its other modes, which bid higher for new customers but still reach existing ones, are the ones Google suggests for purchase goals, where a repeat order is worth something. For a gym, a member re-booking a class isn't a new sale.
Google adds one instruction: if you use New Customer Only, set up a separate campaign to reach existing customers. For a gym, that later campaign is where former members belong. Google lists a retention goal that includes re-engaging lapsed customers; check whether your account offers it. People who canceled in the last year hear a different message, such as a waived enrollment fee, on a budget of its own, so they never compete with the money meant for newcomers.
Members Searching Your Gym's Name Belong to the Brand Campaign
A big source of member clicks is searches for your own name. People type "[your gym] hours" or "[your gym] class schedule" every day, and many of them are members. Performance Max will happily serve ads on those searches and take credit for the class bookings that follow.
Your brand already has a home: the brand campaign from the rollout, running since month one. Add a brand exclusion in Performance Max for your gym's name and its common spellings. Google recommends exactly this if you manage brand traffic in a separate campaign. It keeps Performance Max's budget and its results about people who didn't already know your name.
Without a Video From Inside Your Gym, Google Makes One From Your Photos
Performance Max runs on YouTube, so it wants video. If you don't supply one, Google's auto-generated video setting, which is on by default, builds one from your images and text. For a gym, that can mean a slideshow of equipment photos with a headline or two laid over it, sitting next to a chain's professionally shot ad.
Film your own instead. It doesn't need a production company. A phone, a steady hand and an ordinary weekday give you everything a first video needs.
Chapter 8's review data tells you what to show: the staff, the classes and the coaches each came up in more reviews than the equipment did. Film the front desk saying hello, a coach adjusting someone's form, a class laughing between sets. Get permission from anyone on camera.
The headlines and pictures Google offers to generate with AI at setup can stay unchecked. Move in the headlines from your Search ads that have already earned clicks and joins, and your own photos of your own space.
Performance Max Can Land a Newcomer on the Class Schedule Page Members Use
One more default to change. Performance Max ships with final URL expansion switched on, the same setting Chapter 9 met inside AI Max. It hands the choice of landing page to Google, which may route a gym searcher anywhere on your domain.
A gym site carries pages that exist for members: the class schedule, the booking page, the member login. A boxing gym we looked at in our example market has its schedule, FAQs and a fight-camp program page sitting alongside its membership page. A newcomer dropped onto a schedule full of class codes, with no intro offer in sight, often leaves.
Either turn final URL expansion off, or keep it on and exclude every page that serves members rather than prospects: schedule, booking, login, careers, kids' programs and any page for a program you're not advertising. Point Performance Max at the trial and membership pages, and build custom segments from the long-tail searches in Chapter 6 before launch so Google starts with gym searchers rather than guesses.
Next: New Movers and YouTube Viewers Before They Search
With Performance Max working on newcomers only, the next step reaches people before they type anything. Chapter 11 covers Demand Gen, starting with the people who just moved to your area and don't have a gym yet. Performance Max should also carry the Presence setting and the radius from Chapter 9. The Google Ads for Gyms guide home lists what's left, from Demand Gen to transformation claims.
For gyms on our Google Ads management plans, the member list goes into the account before Performance Max does, and it's refreshed every month after.
